Every furnace, air handler and heat pump pushes air through the same ductwork, day after day. Dust settles, pet dander builds up, and debris from past renovations can sit in the ducts for years. If nobody has cleaned them lately, that's the air moving through your house.

HRVs and ERVs
A fresh-air system for your whole home. It brings outdoor air in and sends stale indoor air out, and recovers heat (HRV) or heat and moisture (ERV) along the way.

Most furnace and heat pump filters should be changed every season, about every three months. A clogged filter makes your system work harder and lets more dust back into your home.

Island air changes a lot through the year:
Alder and cottonwood pollen arrive early, often before the weather feels like spring.
Scotch broom blooms along roadsides from Sooke to Nanaimo, right as tree and grass pollen peak.
Grass pollen is at its highest. When wildfire smoke drifts in, fine particles (PM2.5) put extra load on filters.
Wood smoke from chimneys picks up, and damp air lingers in older basements and crawlspaces.

How can I improve the air quality in my home?
Start with three things: clean ducts, the right filter changed every season, and controlled fresh air and humidity. Depending on your home, that can mean duct cleaning, a filter pack, an HRV or ERV, or a humidifier or dehumidifier. Text or call us and we'll recommend what fits.
How often should I change my furnace or heat pump filter?
Most filters should be changed every season, about every three months. Check it more often if you have pets, allergies, or a renovation underway. A filter pack gives you four filters, one for each season.
What's the difference between an HRV and an ERV?
Both bring fresh outdoor air in and send stale indoor air out. An HRV (heat recovery ventilator) recovers heat between the two air streams. An ERV (energy recovery ventilator) recovers heat and moisture. Which one suits your home depends on how it's built and how humid it runs, so talk to us before you choose.
Do I need a humidifier or a dehumidifier?
It depends on your home and the season. Tight newer homes and homes with damp crawlspaces usually need moisture taken out. Long cold snaps can dry a home out. Tell us what you're noticing and we'll recommend the right fit.
Can I order filters without booking a visit?
Yes. Call the office and we'll match the right size for your system and deliver a pack of four to your door. If your system has a washable filter, we'll let you know.
